The Dollar Station

Don't Miss this Dollar Store
Exterior of the Dollar StationDramatic savings draw people of all income levels to dollar stores. A very good one has recently opened just down the block from the Mall of Louisiana at 7556 Bluebonnet Blvd., next to Mathernes. It's called Dollar Station, and we highly recommend it.

"Our customers tells us all the time that the quality of our merchandise is superior to that of any other dollar store," says owner Rashmi Shah. Offering bargains that will surprise even diehard dollar store fans, Dollar Station also scores points for its clean aisles, neat stock, and friendly service.

A family-owned business run by Rashmi and his daughter Preeya, Dollar Station opened in Baton Rouge a little over eight months ago and quickly began to flourish in its convenient location. Many visitors to the mall start their shopping day at Dollar Station, finding prices that put Wal-Mart to shame.

Wireless supplies at the Dollar StationThe personable father/daughter team pointed out dozens of quality items that this writer would never have imagined could cost so little.

Following are just a few: cell phone accessories, including headphones and chargers; aprons, oven mitts, and kitchen utensils; laundry supplies, air fresheners, carpet deodorizers, tablecloths, shower curtains, toys, floatation devices and other swimming pool toys and supplies; hair accessories and products, gel candles, picture frames; and character items from Looney Toons, Disney, and The Cartoon Network.

One also finds office supplies like tape, markers, pencils and pens, computer paper, packing and mailing envelopes; art supplies like sketch pads and construction paper; calculators, a large selection of toys, ceramic and silk flowers; hardware supplies like screwdrivers, packing tape, and hammers; phone and extension cords; signs such as "No Smoking," "For Sale," and "For Lease," scented trash bags, light bulbs, paintbrushes and rollers, medical supplies including Ace bandages, pill boxes, creams, and basic medicines and remedies; vitamins; seasonal items, greeting cards, paper goods, baby supplies, quality sunglasses, candy, and the largest and best gift bags and accessories one can find in a dollar store.

Red Hat at the Dollar StationDon't miss Dollar Station's party supplies including balloon bouquets and ready-made gift baskets.

Before opening Dollar Station, Rashmi was Director of Technology at Borden Chemicals and Plastics in Geismer, Louisiana. When Borden closed, Rahmi says, "I decided not to return to corporate culture. It's always been my dream to start my own business. I intend to open a new Dollar Station each year!"
