The Silver Sun
Shopping is Fun at The Silver Sun
Cathy Griffin, the vibrant and successful owner of The Silver Sun, wants people to know that Mexican silver jewelry is "much more than the silver bangle you bought for such a good deal, while on vacation on the beach at Cancun." A tour of the Silver Sun provides ample evidence of that observation, revealing hundreds of dazzling and distinctive silver pieces, many of them crafted by direct descendents of the original master silversmiths from Mexico. Turquoise, opals, topaz, amethyst and other gemstones add their brilliant magic to many of these pieces.
Not limited to its rich Mexican heritage, the Silver Sun also imports fine silver from around the world, including works from Thailand, Italy, Denmark and Israel. Newly added lines of white gold and titanium jewelry broaden the scope of The Silver Sun, and will delight the most distinguished tastes.
"One of my philosophies in starting this business was to have something for everyone," says Cathy. "Our prices range from $3 or $300, and we have about 10,000 items to choose from."
Located at its Coursey Boulevard location since 1998, The Silver Sun caters to its customers. "My staff is trained to be personal shoppers," says Cathy. "They ask the right questions. We have less than 4 percent of our merchandise returned, which tells us we're doing a great job in picking out the right choices for people." An extensive customer database lets the staff determine the patterns and styles of past choices, and make informed suggestions for just the right gift.
Before opening The Silver Sun, Cathy was a registered nurse for over 20 years and was also a well-known home care consultant with clients from Baton Rouge to Houston. But when the bureaucracy of her work eventually disenchanted her, she decided to launch a new career -- "something fun and creative," she says.
A few months after opening the Silver Sun, Cathy took a fortuitous trip to the largest jewelry fair in the world, held in Vincenza, Italy. It opened her eyes to the diversity of quality choices that would become the hallmark of her own store. "The Italian fair was a learning experience. There were six huge pavilions of international jewelry; each booth was a polished, finished jewelry store in its own right. It was fabulous." At the fair, Cathy developed a business relationship with a man from central Mexico who had relatives in the silver industry. Against the advice of her friends, Cathy accepted an invitation to visit these craftsmen, and in a tiny town several hours from Mexico City, she discovered her source for the most beautiful silver in the world.
Four years later, with a database of over 13,000 customers, the Silver Sun is all about choices.
Charm bracelets and custom made jewelry are cornerstones of the store and include a huge variety of the popular school spirit bracelets. With upwards of 1000 charms in stock, there's plenty to choose from.
The vaunted Christian Some collection features stunning blue topaz, green quartz, citrines and diamonds, each painstakingly cut and crafted in-house by Christian Some. Rings, earrings, and pendants, some with a rhodium finish, are offered for $200-$300 at The Silver Sun. A whole set of these gorgeous pieces can be had for about $1000 -- sthe price that an individual piece would fetch in New York City.
The store offers a large wedding line -- "everything after the engagement ring," says Cathy. "We want to save the bride time and stress. Instead of running around, we can fit the jewelry and gifts for the entire bridal party."
The Silver Sun also provides expert repairs, engraving, and monogram jewelry.
A silver historian who has met the descendents of such master artists as Victoria Ana Brilanti, Cathy Griffin possesses an infectious enthusiasm for her work and for her wares. You may never look at silver the same after a tour of the treasures available at the Silver Sun. No matter what your budget or tastes require, something special awaits you here.
